The performance of a rubber mat begins with the material from which it is made. Two mats may look similar but behave very differently once exposed to traffic, oils, grease, weather, cleaning chemicals or continuous use. For commercial and industrial applications, selecting the appropriate rubber compound can therefore be just as important as choosing the mat design itself. Natural rubber and nitrile rubber are both widely used in matting, but they are suited to different operating conditions.
What is natural rubber?
Natural rubber is valued for its elasticity, resilience and mechanical strength. These characteristics make it suitable for many general-purpose matting applications where the primary requirements include cushioning, flexibility, traction and resistance to everyday wear.
Depending on the formulation and construction of the finished product, natural-rubber mats can be used in entrances, agricultural environments, workplaces and other commercial areas. Natural rubber is particularly useful where a mat needs to flex repeatedly while maintaining its shape and surface performance.
However, material selection should always consider the environment in which the mat will be used.
What is nitrile rubber?
Nitrile rubber, commonly referred to as NBR, is a synthetic rubber particularly valued where resistance to oils and certain fluids is important.
For that reason, nitrile-containing compounds are commonly considered for environments such as industrial workstations, workshops, food-service areas and other locations where oil or grease exposure may occur.
Not every application requires nitrile. Using a more specialised compound where the operating environment does not require it can add specifications that provide little practical benefit. Conversely, using a general-purpose compound in an environment involving significant oil exposure can shorten product life.
The objective is therefore not to identify which rubber is universally “better”, but which material is more appropriate for the application.
Natural rubber vs nitrile rubber
A useful starting point is to consider the main operating conditions.
- Natural rubber may be appropriate when flexibility and resilience are important, the application involves general commercial use, oil resistance is not a primary requirement, and cushioning and mechanical performance are required.
- Nitrile rubber may be appropriate when the mat will be exposed to oils or grease, the environment is industrial or food-service related, resistance to swelling from certain fluids is important, or the specification calls for an oil-resistant compound.
- The exact performance of either material depends on much more than its general rubber type.
Compound formulation matters
A rubber mat is not simply made from “rubber”.
The finished compound may contain different polymers, fillers, curing systems and other ingredients selected to achieve particular manufacturing and performance characteristics. Even two products described as nitrile mats can contain different proportions of nitrile rubber and may therefore perform differently. The same principle applies to natural-rubber compounds.
This is why professional product selection should be based on the finished product specification and intended application rather than the material name alone.
Consider the complete environment
Before choosing between natural rubber and nitrile rubber, consider:
- Will the mat encounter oil or grease?
- Will it be indoors or outdoors?
- What type of foot, animal or equipment traffic will it receive?
- Is drainage required?
- Is worker comfort important?
- What cleaning method will be used?
- What temperatures and environmental conditions are expected?
- Does the application require a particular size, thickness or format?
Material is only one part of mat performance
Compound selection is important, but it should not be considered in isolation.
Mat thickness, surface geometry, drainage design, backing construction, dimensions, installation and maintenance can all influence how the finished product performs. A well-specified mat therefore combines the appropriate material with a design suited to the operating environment.
Choosing the right rubber mat
For commercial buyers, the most useful approach is to begin with the application rather than a predetermined material.
