A finished rubber mat may appear simple, but producing it consistently requires control over material formulation, processing, moulding, curing and finishing. The manufacturing process begins long before rubber enters a mould. It starts with understanding what the finished mat is expected to do.
1. Define the application
Commercial rubber mats are designed around different operating environments. An entrance scraper mat, dairy mat, anti-fatigue workstation mat and oil-resistant industrial mat do not necessarily require the same compound or construction.
Before production, the operating environment, expected traffic, exposure to water, oils or grease, required flexibility, dimensions, surface design, drainage, colour and finished-product format may need to be considered. These decisions influence both compound formulation and product design.
2. Prepare the rubber compound
Rubber products are manufactured from formulated compounds rather than raw rubber alone. A compound combines the selected rubber polymer with other ingredients required to obtain the desired processing and performance characteristics.
The formulation may vary according to the intended product. A general-purpose rubber mat may require a different formulation from a product designed for oil-exposure environments. Consistency during this stage is important because variations in compounding can affect production and the finished mat.
3. Mix the compound
The ingredients must be mixed so that the components are distributed appropriately throughout the rubber. Mixing conditions are controlled to produce material that can be processed reliably in subsequent stages. After mixing, the compound can be prepared into the form required for the selected manufacturing process.
4. Prepare material for moulding
The mixed rubber is prepared in controlled quantities for the mould. Too little material may prevent the mould cavity from filling correctly, while excessive material can create unnecessary flash and processing variation.
The objective is to provide the appropriate amount and distribution of compound for the product being manufactured.
5. Mould the mat
For moulded rubber mats, the prepared compound is placed into tooling that defines the mat’s physical shape and surface geometry. Heat and pressure are then applied as part of the moulding and curing process.

6. Vulcanise the rubber
Vulcanisation transforms the rubber compound into a stable finished material. During curing, chemical cross-links develop within the rubber structure. This gives the finished product the elastic and mechanical characteristics associated with vulcanised rubber.
Time, temperature and pressure need to be controlled appropriately for the compound and product being manufactured.
7. Remove and finish the product
Once curing is complete, the mat is removed from the mould. Depending on the product, finishing may include trimming excess material, cleaning edges, preparing surfaces or carrying out other finishing operations. At this stage the mat begins to take its final commercial form.
8. Inspect the finished mat
Quality control should confirm that the finished product meets the relevant production requirements. Depending on the product and specification, checks may include dimensions, weight, appearance, surface formation and other defined characteristics.
Consistency is particularly important for commercial orders where multiple mats must perform and install in a predictable manner.
9. Prepare for packing and dispatch
Once production and inspection are complete, products are prepared for packing. For export and commercial supply, packaging must also consider product dimensions, shipment method, handling and destination.
Manufacturing therefore does not end when the mat leaves the mould. The entire process extends from material preparation through to a finished product ready for commercial use.
